I had the pleasure to go see Hancock on Thursday night, and I must say it wasn’t what I was expecting. For those of you with kids that are thinking about seeing the movie; I would recommend against taking the little ones. There are some foul words that you may find offensive and you wouldn’t want your kids repeating them at the bus stop. Hancock is a good movie though and turns the “super hero” genre on its head to deliver a different message. Sometimes not all super heroes really want to be “super”.

Hancock is alone and pretty much the entire city of Los Angeles hates him and they let him know on a regular basis. The Chief of Police, talk show hosts and the public at large refer to him quite often as “asshole”; which only gets under his skin. Jason Bateman’s character; who is a public relations manager of sorts has an encounter with Hancock and tries to “repair his image”. What ensues afterwards is quite funny and and interesting path to take in a super hero movie.

Just as soon as Hancock starts to figure out his past, the bad guys come after him to ruin the day. What Hancock doesn’t realize is he’s not truly alone and one of the most interesting plot twists emerges. I won’t go into detail, but you’ll be surprised. The movie does end in the normal super hero fashion that tells us there could possibly be a sequel in the future, but only time will tell. Overall, I would give Hancock 3 out of 4 stars. It’s a fresh twist on a popular movie genre and has some interesting moments. My only criticism is that it seemed to be about 20 minutes too short…the end seemed almost rushed. It’s a good movie, but at $9.50/ticket (what I paid) I think many people would be happy with giving it a rental.
