I was only a kid when disco was cool but looking back I still don’t understand it. The style, the music and even the overall vibe seems a little goofy to me. Sure it is cool now but only because people love retro and movies like Boogie Nights. Just like the disco days of the 70’s, using digg to bring in more traffic was an ongoing mystery for me. At least until now…

I signed up a few years ago when it seemed like the cool thing to do but unlike platform shoes and flashy pants, I can actually see a reason for using digg. If you manage it properly it can take your blog from bus boy status to king of the blogosphere in only a matter of months. The best part, you don’t have to be hung like a horse to get there (It may help?).

Here are a few tips on using Digg that were passed along to me from one of the superstars of the blog world, Don Chavez.

1) Start adding people as friends. Seems simple eh, you need friends to build up a network, go figure.  A good place to start is to friend some of the people who have made the stories on the front page popular.  Chances are good if you build up a reputation with them they will hit you back with diggs.

2) Stop submitting your own content. This is one major area I have been falling into. I do up a killer post and submit it to digg myself. It is better if someone else submits it instead.

3) When you submit a link, click on the “share” button and send a shout to everyone on your friend list that you have built up.  Leave a brief note along the lines of “I’d appreciate a digg on this submission, and if you get a chance please shout it to your friends as well.  Shout me back and I’ll digg your posts as well.” Feel free to copy and paste that for future use.

4) You should always have a lot more diggs than submissions. Again I have failed at this. I am working on it and from all the hours I have been spending on Digg, it should work.  If people see that you’ve submitted 50 links but have only dugg 20 links, they probably won’t bother with you. the term poser comes to mind. You can’t fake it in this game.

5) Everyone you work with, communicate with or share blog groups with all need to work together. If you are in a group of 20 people and they sent out a shout for Size matters when using Digg on their friend list, in theroy it should have no problems getting 500 diggs.

6) Build up a reputation. You don’t get to be Dirk Digg-ler without a killer reputation for size. If yout stories start to hit the front page consistently people will start to recognize you and your group and they will digg your submissions regularly.  Check out this guy’s profile. 31% of his submissions become popular and it is not by chance.  Look at all of the diggs he has dropped. .

7) Getting to the front page of digg is a huge traffic burst (and a dream of mine), but the key is that you want to keep that traffic coming back to your site.  So if you do make it to the front page, don’t sit back and enjoy the traffic (okay you can a bit).  Put your best stuff out there, whip it out for all to see so that the 80k+ visitors realize that they should check out your site everyday.

There you have it, pose for the camera, you are on your way to being a Digg-ler now. While you are basking in the glow of your new found fame, add me to your digg list and I will return the favour.

GrandmasterB would like to thank Cuzoogle for contributing some of the tips that he has learned from some of the Digg Masters and shared with the masses. For more insight into the world of Cuzoogle HQ check out his site, from basketball to babes…you won’t be disappointed.

By the way…GrandmasterB is also strutting his stuff on digg so add him as well if you would be so kind.
