Yesterday I read a great post at BuzzMyBlog (How to Get a Higher Google PageRank) regarding the subtle nuances of the Google PageRank algorithm and decided to do a little investigating. Now I’m not one to complain, but I couldn’t figure out how Jeff’s site got a PR4 and I only managed a PR1. I know…I know, my site is still an infant at just a little over a month old, but there’s more to it than that. What has Jeff managed to do in such a short amount of time that takes most bloggers a year or two to accomplish? Let me tell you…

I have been reading Jeff’s blog ever since I read his guest post on JohnCow.com and long before GrandmasterB.com existed. His post was brilliant! He talked about how many of the “Make Money Online” advertisements touting a four-figure monthly income is only one click away are bogus, and making real money online takes hard work and perseverance. After reading that post I decided I would try my hand at starting a blog (GrandmasterB.com).

I have followed Jeff’s lessons to the letter, dotted every i and crossed every t but I missed something. You see a high Google PageRank isn’t about how many links you get back to your site…it’s the quality of those links. Just like writing posts to your blog…it’s all about quality not quantity. I compared my site to Jeff’s in regards to backlinks with SiteAmount to see how I stacked up.

Buzzmyblog.com

  • PageRank: 4
  • Alexa: 164,986
  • Backlinks
    • Google: 155
    • Yahoo: 1276
  • Indexed Pages
    • Google: 125
    • Yahoo: 133

GrandmasterB.com

  • PageRank: 1
  • Alexa: 787,729
  • Backlinks
    • Google: 122
    • Yahoo: 1028
  • Indexed Pages
    • Google: 135
    • Yahoo: 40

As you can see the numbers regarding backlinks and indexed pages by Google are almost identical. The key is that If your blog is linked by a site of higher PR it makes your site more credible (in the eye of almighty Google). Also, Jeff has written great content and given his readers a reason to link back to him. His WeeklyBuzz contest encourages readers to signup their blogs for a review and a special prize and now that his PageRank is a 4…there’s more reason than ever to win that review.

I guess in comparison to BuzzMyBlog, I’m not doing too bad overall. For a blog that is just over a month old I’m doing pretty good. All I need to do is keep writing good content that encourages readers to link back and I’ll be golden. If I should find anything that works during my journey to blogging stardom I’ll be sure to post it for all to see. Have any of you found anything (you don’t have to share too many details) that works for improving your PageRank?
