Improving Your Google PageRank
Posted on May 1st, 2008 by GrandmasterB under Social NetworkingYesterday I read a great post at BuzzMyBlog (How to Get a Higher Google PageRank) regarding the subtle nuances of the Google PageRank algorithm and decided to do a little investigating. Now I’m not one to complain, but I couldn’t figure out how Jeff’s site got a PR4 and I only managed a PR1. I know…I know, my site is still an infant at just a little over a month old, but there’s more to it than that. What has Jeff managed to do in such a short amount of time that takes most bloggers a year or two to accomplish? Let me tell you…
I have been reading Jeff’s blog ever since I read his guest post on JohnCow.com and long before GrandmasterB.com existed. His post was brilliant! He talked about how many of the “Make Money Online” advertisements touting a four-figure monthly income is only one click away are bogus, and making real money online takes hard work and perseverance. After reading that post I decided I would try my hand at starting a blog (GrandmasterB.com).
I have followed Jeff’s lessons to the letter, dotted every i and crossed every t but I missed something. You see a high Google PageRank isn’t about how many links you get back to your site…it’s the quality of those links. Just like writing posts to your blog…it’s all about quality not quantity. I compared my site to Jeff’s in regards to backlinks with SiteAmount to see how I stacked up.
Buzzmyblog.com
- PageRank: 4
- Alexa: 164,986
- Backlinks
- Google: 155
- Yahoo: 1276
- Indexed Pages
- Google: 125
- Yahoo: 133
GrandmasterB.com
- PageRank: 1
- Alexa: 787,729
- Backlinks
- Google: 122
- Yahoo: 1028
- Indexed Pages
- Google: 135
- Yahoo: 40
As you can see the numbers regarding backlinks and indexed pages by Google are almost identical. The key is that If your blog is linked by a site of higher PR it makes your site more credible (in the eye of almighty Google). Also, Jeff has written great content and given his readers a reason to link back to him. His WeeklyBuzz contest encourages readers to signup their blogs for a review and a special prize and now that his PageRank is a 4…there’s more reason than ever to win that review.
I guess in comparison to BuzzMyBlog, I’m not doing too bad overall. For a blog that is just over a month old I’m doing pretty good. All I need to do is keep writing good content that encourages readers to link back and I’ll be golden. If I should find anything that works during my journey to blogging stardom I’ll be sure to post it for all to see. Have any of you found anything (you don’t have to share too many details) that works for improving your PageRank?

For only being a month old your blog is doing AWESOME! Keep up the good work. I wish I had been were you are after only a month. I am sure with the next PR Update by Google, you will move up considerably. You have a few months, make them count!

All I can suggest is hooking onto the star that is Cuzoogle because it is ready to shoot to the other side of the universe, crash into the DeathStar, bounce through the milky way and explode into the sun.
Sounds like a fun ride eh?
The Buzz My Blog guy is a good person to follow and get tips from for sure.

I think you are doing great!
I have not checked my stats but after being around for a month my main blog was given PR4! Woo hoo….. then after 3 months Google stole it from me and I never really knew why. I had done a few small paid posts but that was it.
Another blog that is almost exclusively paid posts kept itself a nice PR3! It just does not figure!!

Thanks for the comments guys! I’m trying to figure out ways to drive more traffic to the site with creative hooks, but it’s a work in progress. I don’t have the funds right now to do anything in the paid advertising market. I’m hoping within a month or two I’ll hit PR2 or PR3 if things go right.

I don’t know how it happened, but somehow I’ve ended up with PR5 for my little gallery site. I started the site in late January, and for a while I thought I was in the sandbox for a while. My personal blog, where I’ve been writing for nearly 2 years is PR4.
I think you’re doing really well after only a month; you’ve made a great start.
