Planet Green: Greensburg

Since the regular Prime Time television shows are in hiatus for the Summertime, I have been looking for something to watch in my “spare time” that would keep my interest. I know it sounds a little crazy, but GrandmasterB enjoys “how-to” programming. The Food Network, DIY, HGTV all of them are really addicting to me. I think that I enjoy them because it gives me ideas of what I could do on my own. About a month or two ago the Discovery Health channel disappeared giving way to a new channel focused on Sustainable Living and Conservation…Planet Green. I found out about it from my brother and tuned in thinking it was just something that was taking advantage of the current “green” push, but I was wrong. I was instantly hooked on all of the technology and the ideas that people had to make their lives more “green“. What I wasn’t prepared for was a new series that started last week…Greensburg.
Greensburg is an amazing show that is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio about a small town in Kansas that was wiped out by an F5 category tornado in May of 2007. The series starts off by recounting the events on May 4, 2007 where the entire town was destroyed by the tornado. When I say “the entire town”; I mean the entire town. The only standing building after the storm passed was an old grain elevator, everything else was gone. After the storm the town decides that it would be in their best interests to rebuild the town, but they want to rebuild “green”. The series follows a few of the families through the rebuilding process as well as some of the interesting products they are using.
I cannot imagine the daunting task of having to rebuild my home god forbid it was destroyed. The fact that this smalltown community is working together (some of course go rogue) to rebuild a town “green” is just phenomenal. If you’re interested in watching Greensburg or learning more about Planet Green check them out online and you can also find what channel Planet Green is on in your area.

nothing wrong with being addicted to HGTV, it is a sign of growing up I think. The same as finally learning to like jazz and wine.

What a great idea. If you have to rebuild a town, why not do it right.

It truly is a great idea and not an easy task at all. I’ve been thinking about small, cheap ways that I can reduce the waste around La Casa del GrandmasterB. It’s amazing when you put your mind to it how you can do your part with little impact to your daily life.

I DVR’d the first episode on Discovery HD but it self deleted before I got to it
. Is the show on a different channel normally? I don’t think I get the channel is regularly on.
