The Right Category Makes a World of Difference
Posted on June 7th, 2008 by GrandmasterB under Social NetworkingI am a firm believer in using all types of social networking sites to bring traffic to GrandmasterB.com, and I try to spread the love around so I don’t put all of my eggs into one basket. Unfortunately, yesterday I counted on StumbleUpon to bring in some major traffic for my latest tutorials and it killed my stats:
How To Create Killer Metallic Text - Part One
How To Create Killer Metallic Text - Part Two
I say unfortunately, because I had planned on submitting the tutorials to Pixel2Life and Tutorialized once published. What I didn’t take into account was that after 24-hours of submitting each part of the tutorial they are still in PENDING limbo. I know that is must be difficult to get all of the submitted tutorials approved within a relatively quick amount of time, but I guess I was just looking forward to the quick boost in traffic.
The real kicker yesterday wasn’t the tutorial sites it was getting part one of the tutorial stumbled. Normally, I love having a post stumbled but the discoverer (yet to be determined) posted my tutorial in the wrong category. Apparently, when they read the title they completely glossed over the part that said “Photoshop Tutorial” and caught only the word “Metallic”. Seeing the word metal sparked a reaction that completely killed the post on StumbleUpon…the individual put it into the Mining/Metallurgy category. So needless to say the folks with Graphic-Design in their profile missed out on my post if they were stumbling yesterday.
Since discovering that the post was in the incorrect category I have submitted a ticket to have it placed in the correct category. The fine folks at StumbleUpon that take on the task of re-categorizing a post are volunteers and they should be commended on the job that they do…THANKS RECATTING GROUP!
So, if you’re ever discovering a site on StumbleUpon and find yourself wondering which category to put it under; read through the article and really look at what it’s all about. You might just get lucky and learn something along the way.

I didn’t even know about putting things in the right categories for places like stumbleupon. I guess I’m lucky I usually get to blogs so late in the evening I don’t get the popup review box as much.
I went back and looked at some posts of mine people stumbled and they were all in wrong categories as well.
I think it makes a HUGE difference getting stuff into the proper categories on social networking sites. I know I’ll be paying more attention in the future.

To update you guys it’s now in Web Design. Not exactly the correct category, but it’s better than Mining. Let’s see if the traffic turns around now.
