I had the pleasure of taking my two boys to see WALL•E yesterday, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. I’ve never been disappointed by a Pixar film, and WALL•E was no different. The movie’s main character is a robot that is put to the task of cleaning up the Earth while all of the humans have fled the planet aboard what could be described as a huge space cruise ship. While the planet is being cleaned up the humans have spent the past 700 years waiting for signs of plant life to return along with becoming extremely obese.

I couldn’t help but notice that the movie was not only geared towards children. This movie has a message for adults as well. Hidden beneath the cutesy exterior of this robotic love story, the folks at Pixar have given us a glimpse of our future (albeit extreme) if we continue on this destructive path of using and abusing the planet’s resources. During the opening scenes we see just how destructive the human race has been. The cleanup robots have built towering skyscrapers of garbage, the entire planted is a desolate wasteland. There is also another little innuendo that a large corporation has taken over the planet (Buy n’ Large). I could only imagine that this corporation was loosely based on Wal-Mart; although, I may be wrong.

Overall, the movie was fantastic and as with most Pixar movies I will most definitely purchase the DVD and watch it over and over with the boys. I’d like to hear from any of you if you’ve seen the movie. What did you think of it? Am I reading too much into the movie’s symbolism?
